The Hawthorns 'wind tunnel'
The Hawthorns tower blocks were built offset from each other diagonally. The gap this caused was west-facing and due to the prevailing westerly winds, the blocks acted as a funnel. On windy days residents (mostly elderly retired) were regularly blown over.
